What were the goals?

  • To achieve the required academic attainments that would allow the student to progress to his desired college course.

What were the challenges the student was experiencing before the BrightTeachTutor’s support?

The student was initially disengaged and unable to engage with the tutor, he would try to avoid learning by staying in his room.

What did the tutor do?

The tutor worked closely with the young person’s parent, with the parent’s gentle persuasion he would initially come out of his room and engage with the tutor for short periods.  Initial engagement was always short (10-15 minutes) whilst the tutor and student built a rapport.  The tutor used this time to understand the student’s interests alongside the challenges he was experiencing.

As the student and tutor got to know each other his engagement and the length of the sessions gradually increased.

Were the goals met and how?

The student has made fantastic progress, engaging for longer sessions which have switched from ‘getting to know you’ to curriculum based learning.  The journey is a gradual one but the tutor is confident that he will achieve the goals that have been set.

What was the impact of the BrightTeach Tutor’s support?

The tutor notes that the student has completely transformed. He has gone from a student struggling to engage and struggling to find motivation, to a student who is hungry to learn, engaged and positive. The student is now regularly completing 2 hour lessons with ease and tackling challenging topics such as algebra and the analysis of persuasive language.

These changes have not just meant positive educational change but they have also had a positive impact on family life.   The challenges with engagement clearly impacted the family previously and now that he has become engaged with the lessons, the tensions have lessened.
